Gemini Free vs AI Plus vs Pro vs Ultra: What Changed on October 9 and Which Plan to Pick

Gemini Free vs AI Plus vs Pro vs Ultra: What Changed on October 9 and Which Plan to Pick

If you opened the Gemini app this month and found that your model picker looks different, you are not imagining it. Google has changed which Gemini models people can use depending on whether they pay, and the free tier took the biggest hit. This guide explains what changed on October 9, 2026, how the four options (free, Google AI Plus, Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra) now compare, and which one makes sense for you.

One important point first: this is about access to models and limits, not the model launch itself. If you want to know about the newest model, see our separate guide to Gemini 4 Argon.

Quick Summary

  • From October 9, 2026, Google says changes “start to take effect” for people without a Google AI subscription. Free personal accounts move to Gemini’s automatic model selection, with most replies coming from Flash-Lite.
  • Google AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash but loses access to the Pro model. Google says Plus subscribers will get an email telling them when this applies to them.
  • Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra do not lose any models.
  • US prices reported by 9to5Google: Plus $4.99, Pro $19.99, Ultra $99.99 per month (Ultra is also reported at $199.99 for the higher tier). These prices were not on Google’s help page, so check before you buy.

What Changed on October 9

Google’s Gemini Apps help page says model availability “will change” for personal-account users starting in October 2026. In plain English, Google is sorting people into tiers by how much compute they use:

  • Free users no longer get to pick between Flash, Pro and others by hand. Gemini chooses for you, and most prompts go to the lightest model, Flash-Lite. Reports say that if smart model selection is turned off, every reply uses Flash-Lite.
  • AI Plus users lose the Pro model but keep Flash-Lite and Flash.
  • AI Pro and Ultra users keep everything they had.

Note: Release dates and rollout timing can change. Please confirm the latest details on the official website or help center.

This did not come out of nowhere. Google’s page and press coverage describe earlier steps: usage-limit and model changes began for users over 18 on May 17, 2026, and reached users under 18 on July 24, 2026. The October 9 step is the one that hits free and Plus users hardest.

What are Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro?

Think of them as three gears. Flash-Lite is the fastest and cheapest, good for quick questions, rewriting a sentence or a simple summary. Flash is a balanced all-rounder. Pro is the strongest of the three for hard reasoning, long documents and complex coding. Google’s help page names only these three families and does not list version numbers. 9to5Google reports Flash-Lite 3.5, Flash 3.6 and Pro 3.1, but that is not on Google’s page, so treat the numbers as reported rather than confirmed.

How do usage limits work now?

Per Google, limits are based on compute rather than a simple message count. They refresh every five hours until you hit a weekly limit. Heavier tasks such as image and video generation, Deep Research, the Pro model and extended thinking use more of your allowance. Google also says low, medium and high “effort” levels apply to each model, and that higher effort gives more thorough answers but uses more of your limit.

Relative to the standard limit, Google’s page describes Plus as 2x and Pro as 4x, with Ultra at 5x or 20x of Pro depending on the subscription. One outlet that covered the story described the multiples differently (Pro as five times the free plan), so the exact numbers are worth checking on Google’s current page. Google gives no hard cap in messages.

The Four Options Compared

Free: fine for light use

If you mostly ask short questions, draft a quick email or translate a phrase, Flash-Lite is usually enough. You lose the ability to force a stronger model on a hard task, though, so very complex work may feel weaker. Gemini stays free to use.

Google AI Plus: cheap, but no Pro

Reported at $4.99 per month in the US, Plus gives you Flash-Lite and Flash with higher limits than free. According to Google’s plans page, it also includes extra storage (400 GB, with a 2 TB option shown in the comparison table), more media generation and family sharing with up to five others. The catch is the Pro model, which is removed. If you subscribed to Plus specifically to get Pro, this is the change to watch for in your email.

Google AI Pro: the cheapest plan that keeps Pro

Reported at $19.99 per month in the US, Pro keeps Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro. Google’s plans page lists 5 TB of storage, 4x higher access to Gemini, access to Gemini 4 Argon and a number of bundled extras such as Chrome auto browse and expanded limits in developer tools. Students may be eligible for a free year of AI Pro in some regions, so check the eligibility page if that applies to you.

Google AI Ultra: for heavy and professional use

Ultra is reported from $99.99 per month, with a higher tier reported at $199.99. Google’s plans page shows 20 TB of storage from the lower Ultra tier, up to 20x higher access to Gemini and higher limits across Google’s creative and developer tools. There is no model change for Ultra in this update.

Note: Features and policies may vary by plan, region and app version, and can change at any time. Check the official help center for the latest information.

What Is Not Confirmed Yet

  • Deep Think on AI Pro. Google’s help page appears to have changed over time. Reports say one version named both Pro and Ultra, another named only Ultra, and later US-English versions no longer mentioned it, while some other language versions still did. Google has not explained the difference, so do not buy Pro just for Deep Think without checking your own region’s page.
  • Version numbers. Google’s help page names families only. Version labels come from press coverage.
  • Prices outside the US. The prices we found are in US dollars. We did not find official UK pricing, so UK readers should check Google’s own page.
  • Exact timing for Plus. Google says Plus users will be emailed their date. It is also not clear whether October 9 is global or staged by country.
  • Work and school accounts. The coverage we reviewed does not say how these are affected.

Which Plan Should You Pick?

Step by step

  1. Try free for a week. Note whether you ever feel the model is too weak or you hit limits.
  2. Check your use. If you do long documents, tricky coding or detailed research, you probably want Pro-level access.
  3. Look at the storage bundle. If you were going to buy Google storage anyway, a plan that includes it can be better value than paying separately. Our guide to freeing up Google storage may help you decide how much you need.
  4. Compare with rivals. See our ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Claude comparison before you commit.
  5. Start monthly. Monthly billing lets you cancel if the limits do not suit you.

Quick picks

  • Casual user: stay free.
  • Want a bit more room and extras, no need for Pro: Plus.
  • Need the Pro model regularly: Pro.
  • Professional or power user hitting limits: Ultra, or consider other assistants listed in our best free AI tools roundup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Gemini still free?

Yes. Gemini remains free, but free personal accounts are moved to automatic model selection where most replies come from Flash-Lite, and you can no longer choose Flash or Pro by hand.

When does the change start?

Google says changes start to take effect for people without an AI subscription on October 9, 2026. Plus subscribers get an email with their own date.

Does AI Plus still include Pro?

No. According to Google’s help page, Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash but the Pro model is removed.

How much do the plans cost?

Reported US prices are $4.99 for Plus, $19.99 for Pro and from $99.99 for Ultra per month. These came from 9to5Google rather than Google’s help page, so verify on Google’s site for your country.

Do Pro and Ultra subscribers lose anything?

Not in terms of models. Google’s page says Pro and Ultra keep Flash-Lite, Flash and Pro. Usage limits still apply.

The Bottom Line

Gemini’s free tier is now a lighter, automatic experience, Plus is a cheaper middle step without Pro, and Pro is the first plan that keeps the Pro model. Most people can stay free and upgrade only if they notice the limits. Before paying, confirm prices and what is included for your country on Google’s own pages.
