Google Storage Full? How to Free Up Space in Gmail, Drive and Photos

Google Storage Full? How to Free Up Space in Gmail, Drive and Photos

Every Google account comes with 15 GB of free storage, shared between Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos. It sounds like a lot until years of email attachments, phone backups and videos fill it up. Then the warnings start: “Your storage is almost full.”

The good news is that most people can free up gigabytes in 15 minutes without paying for more space.

What Happens When Google Storage Is Full?

  • Gmail can’t send or receive new emails, and senders may get a bounce-back message.
  • New photos and videos stop backing up to Google Photos.
  • You can’t upload or create new files in Google Drive.

So it’s worth fixing quickly, especially if you rely on Gmail.

Step 1: See What’s Using Your Space

Go to one.google.com/storage while signed in. You’ll see exactly how much space Gmail, Drive and Photos each use, plus a built-in storage manager that suggests large items and junk to delete. Start with whichever service is the biggest.

Step 2: Clean Up Gmail

Find emails with large attachments

In the Gmail search bar, type has:attachment larger:10M and press Enter. This shows emails with attachments bigger than 10 MB. Delete the ones you don’t need. Try larger:5M next to go deeper.

Clear out old promotions and newsletters

Search category:promotions older_than:1y, select all, and delete. Do the same with category:social.

Empty Trash and Spam

Deleted emails still count toward your storage until they leave the Trash. Open Trash and Spam and click Empty now on each. (Gmail empties them automatically after 30 days, but you don’t have to wait.)

Step 3: Clean Up Google Drive

  1. Open drive.google.com and click Storage in the left menu. This lists your files from largest to smallest.
  2. Delete or download old videos, ZIP files and duplicate backups you no longer need.
  3. Open Trash in Drive and click Empty trash. Files in the Drive trash still use space until they’re deleted forever.

Tip: Files that other people own and share with you don’t count toward your storage, so you can leave those alone.

Step 4: Clean Up Google Photos

Photos and videos are usually the biggest storage users.

  1. Open the Google Photos app or photos.google.com.
  2. Go to your profile picture > Photos settings or Manage storage.
  3. Review the suggested categories: large videos, screenshots, blurry photos and photos from other apps.
  4. Delete what you don’t need, then empty the Photos Trash (or Bin).

Lower your backup quality

In Photos settings, switch backup quality from Original quality to Storage saver. New photos will use less space while still looking great on phones and laptops. On some accounts, you can also compress existing photos to recover space, but note that this can’t be undone.

Step 5: Check Old Phone Backups

If you’ve switched phones, an old Android device backup may still be stored in your Google account. Check the storage manager at one.google.com/storage, look for backups, and delete any from devices you no longer use.

Still Full? Your Options

  • Download and move files: Use Google Takeout (takeout.google.com) to download a copy of your photos or files, save them to an external drive, then delete them from Google.
  • Upgrade your storage: Google One plans add more space for a monthly fee. Some Google AI plans also include extra storage, which you can read about in our Google Gemini guide.
